Working together to build a better future

Our commitment to labor runs as deep as our commitment to delivering high-quality, affordable care. And with our unmatched model of integrated care, you can count on us to be a strong partner.

Every day, Kaiser Permanente collaborates with our union workers to improve what we do. It’s how we got our start — and how we’ll continue to keep your members healthy, strong, and on the job.

Our history of health

Since 1945, our membership has come a long way. We’ve grown from caring for 13,000 union members to over 912,000 union members and their families.

Our internal union membership has also grown with us. As one of the largest unionized, nonprofit* health care organizations in the country, we’re committed to providing world-class care to people who work for a living.

An innovative partnership

Most of our union workers, managers, and clinical staff work together as the Labor Management Partnership, a joint commitment to share decision-making and problem-solving in the workplace. Formed by Kaiser Permanente and the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions more than 20 years ago, this groundbreaking partnership gives employees a strong voice in improving and delivering care.

Achieving great things together

The success of the Labor Management Partnership rests on our unit-based teams — work groups that collaborate to help improve performance. The idea behind unit-based teams is that every person on the job has a valuable perspective. These teams staffed by union members are empowered to innovate the way we deliver care and contribute to Kaiser Permanent’s national leadership.

Improving outcomes

Empowered employees working together provides better quality care for our members and creates a top workplace for employees.

Highly engaged unit-based teams at Kaiser Permanente show 13% improved hospital patient satisfaction and 38% fewer workplace injuries.

Creating jobs for thousands

Union members are also vital to building and maintaining our care facilities across the country. Each hospital we build takes 3 years of work by 200 union workers. Each medical office needs 18 months of work and 85 union workers. By working together, we’re developing the next generation of hospitals and medical offices — while supporting union jobs and strengthening trust funds.
