Convenient Care While Traveling
Added Choice Members have more care options while traveling starting January 1, 2023.
Kaiser Permanente Added Choice Plan members now have more participating provider options while traveling.1 As part of our continued enhancements to help our members get the care they need when they need it, we’ve collaborated with Cigna so that our Added Choice members will have access to Cigna’s PPO Network for in-network services when they travel outside of Kaiser Permanente states (Hawaii, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, D.C.).2,3
With the Cigna PPO Network, Kaiser Permanente Added Choice members get:
- More locations: With a broad network of participating providers, members have more options for care when traveling. To find Cigna PPO Network participating providers, members can visit kp.org/addedchoice-hawaii
- Simple check-in: Added Choice members will show their new ID card with the Cigna logo when visiting a participating provider.
- Lower cost:4,5 Thanks to lower contracted rates, members may expect to pay less for many services with a coinsurance. Services received from a participating provider within the Cigna PPO Network outside of a Kaiser Permanente state will be covered under the Contracted Provider network.
- Less paperwork: The Cigna PPO Network participating providers will submit any necessary precertification for care, so members don’t have to.
Note: To be covered, members must continue to access Kaiser Permanente providers in Hawaii and existing Kaiser Permanente providers in all Kaiser Permanente states.2,3,4,5
For 2023 group contracts, the employees’ Certificate of Insurance (COI) will reflect the Cigna PPO
Network change. Added Choice groups with a 2022 group contract still in effect in 2023 will get a rider to amend the employees’ COI and reflect the change that went into effect January 1, 2023.

1 Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. (KFHP) underwrites the Kaiser Permanente provider option. The contracted and non-contracted provider options of this plan are underwritten by Kaiser Permanente Insurance Company (KPIC), a subsidiary of KFHP.
2 Starting January 1, 2023, the Cigna PPO Network will be added for access outside of Kaiser Permanente states for all covered benefits. The Cigna PPO Network refers to the health care providers (doctors, hospitals, specialists) contracted as part of the Cigna PPO for Shared Administration.
Cigna is an independent company and not affiliated with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., and its subsidiary health plans. Access to the Cigna PPO Network is available through Cigna’s contractual relationship with the Kaiser Permanente health plans. The Cigna PPO Network is provided exclusively by or through operating subsidiaries of Cigna Corporation, including Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company. The Cigna name, logo, and other Cigna marks are owned by Cigna Intellectual Property, Inc.
3 Kaiser Permanente states are Hawaii, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, D.C.
4 Please see your Evidence of Coverage and/or your Certificate of Insurance for details.
5 If a Non-Contracted Provider is used, the member is responsible for the difference between the Maximum Allowable Charge (MAC) and the amount the Non-Contracted Provider actually charged, in addition to any applicable deductible and coinsurance amounts.
